Hello Jalia Walda! great to meet you! Please tell us a little about yourself and what business you start.

My name is Jalia Walda, and I am a co-founder of Mulangira Tea and Mina Beauty, We mainly help people get back in shape, live a healthy lifestyle, and have clear skin.

Our customers are 90% women and 10% men. The first year we made $300,000 in sales and last year we made  $ 4 million in sales and hoping to do more this year.

It started with me when I wanted to lose weight and couldn’t find a product that worked for me as a mother, I didn’t have time to run to gyms or do crazy diets, so I found my business partner who had a product that worked best that helped lose over 50Ibs, I then introduced it to people they loved it, it worked for them then we decided to become partners.

For skincare, my mom used to do cosmetics and I admired how she helped people get their skin cleared, so I decided to become a licensed cosmetic chemist so I can formulate products and help women especially women of colors and or use of chemicals I want something natural yet effective. Which I managed to archive. I started with $50 as capital

Describe the process of launching the business.

My husband and I decided to go back to school and study so that I could know exactly what I was doing.

I started with a face cream and I designed my label and product. I then registered my trademarks of Mulangira Tea and Jalia Walda. All our products are now tested and approved.

I didn’t have a lot of customers in the start but I did get some. We mainly get our customers through word of mouth.

Now we have a large clientele. The biggest thing is to always be transparent to your customers tell them what a product does and have good customer care service.

Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers? How have you attracted users?

We use social media a lot and that’s how we market our products, I don’t just sell products but I have a relationship with my customers. We also do Ads and have our products on Amazon we run ads and word of mouth.

I don’t take other businesses as my competitors, I just create the best products that work for my audience, they bring in customers because our return rate is 75%, and we sell on Shopify and Amazon.

Through starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?  What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced and obstacles you’ve overcome?

The biggest challenge was the change in the prices of raw materials, everything went high but it takes time to change the price of a product, the best thing was to change my store from Shopify to Amazon.

Getting good marketing agencies, We have three agencies doing our marketing. Praying for my business and being open has contributed to 60% growth.

What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?

I don’t read books a lot, only the Bible but I have master classes I take and do my research. I have a business mentor my husband and my prophet Samuel Kakande who does business and helps with mentoring.

Are you looking to hire for certain positions right now?

We currently have 15 employees at our one business. Five are part-timers who work from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

Tasks begin with manufacturing, packing, customer care, cleaning, editors, and designers.
